Exercise a Great Medicine

Exercise a Great Medicine

This is just a snippet of a conversation that I had with one of my clients on Saturday morning, one of my oldest clients I may add as he is 72 years of age….he wont mind me sharing that with you. This lets you see how exercise is a great medicine.

Exercise a Great Medicine – Background

Anyway Maurice has been coming to me since October of last year, pretty regularly I would add at least once a week, one of the main reasons that he came to me was to help him get his fitness back as he wanted to get back skiing with his grandchildren.  However one of the set backs, if you could call it that, is that Maurice has leukaemia and the medication that he takes also has some ugly side effects such as leg cramps, diarrhoea, lethargy etc to name but a few.

So we started a fitness programme and lets say that Maurice had a love hate relationship with me!!!!!  He loved the idea of coming along to my gym, however he hated the hour of working out although he always knew that at the end of it he would feel really good. we always have a standing joke as I always catch him clock watching to see how long he has to go.

So we trained every week and he started to feel stronger and felt that his muscles were developing, his stomach muscles also felt stronger and he had to tie his trousers tighter!!!  However it wasn’t happening fast enough for Maurice as he felt that the drugs he had to take for his leukaemia were inhibiting his progress, but he didn’t give up because he knew that exercise is a good medicine and he was determined that he would get the results that he wanted.

Exercise a Great Medicine – a Good Day

So on Saturday Maurice came in for his Personal Training session and it was the first I had seen him for about 2 weeks, so as we started to warm up we were catching up on his news.  He walks with the “old codgers” a bunch of guys all retired who go walking every week throughout Glasgow, so as he was regaling me of his exploits since I had seen him, he suddenly said to me that this was the first day that he felt totally pain free from his leukaemia and he thanked me for helping him get to this point.

So I thought I would share this story, with Maurice’s permission, that exercise is a great medicine and if you keep working at it, the benefits most definitely outway the negatives of having to put in a bit of effort.

Maurice had a great training session on Saturday, a good aerobic interval session on the treadmill, followed by some free weights and abdominal exercises…he was goosed at the end but feeling good, as was his personal trainer!!
